New Brighton - Storage in 2010
Aoraki use the compound at Owles Terrace (ex Christchurch City Council workshop and base) to store boats and as a training base.
Cavalier Trailers have custom built a trailer for Aoraki, capable of moving six of our new Champion Dragon Boats.
| 1. Four boats are on the trailer over winter, in the Owles Terrace shed. The red boat to the left is CPC, Tu Meke (black boat) to its right then some of the four boats on the trailer. |
2. Canterbury Dragons (CPC) have bought a Champion Dragon Boat, which is effectively "in the pool" of boats used at any regatta. Teams must ask CPC before using it for training, however. |
| 3. Tu Meke Dragon Boat Club have also bought one of the 20-paddler boats. |
4. The newer boats were loaded onto the Trailer in June 2010, and are stored over winter in the shed. |
| 5. The front of the trailer has a 'tool box' which holds the winch control lead (see below), plus the battery connection leads. |
6. Inside the lockable box, are the battery jumper leads... |
7. ... and the winch control box (Up and Down). Also shown are the loops on the end of the sling strops. The 'operator' stands clear of the boat and can lift the boat on his own (although it is wise to have two more people steadying the suspended boats). |
8. A stainless steel H-frame is bolted to the trailer for travel. But to load Champion Boat, it sits on the gunwale rails. The webbing strops hook over the H-frame bars, and are slung under the boat (and hook onto the other side of the H) |
| 9. Looking from the draw-bar (front of the trailer) this shows the lower rung of the (3-high) trailer. Note the four foam rubber padding attachments to the rails. |
10. This shows some of the boats sitting on the rungs of the trailer. |
| 11. Logos identify the boats owned by sports clubs (but that are made available for Aoraki or NZDBA regatta). |
12. Tarpulins over the boats to keep out any dust, rain and birds. |
| 13. The end of the (12 Volt) winch swing arm is locked into position for travel |
14. Viewed from almost end on, showing the (12 Volt DC) cabling. |
| 15. One spare space on the top rung. The centre pillar supports the swing arm. |
16. The H-frame shown (from above) straddles the draw bar assembly of the trailer (transit). |
| 17. This 12 Volt elecrtic hoist hooks into this eye, in the middle of the the H-frame. |
18. This is how the H-frame bolts onto the trailer. |
| 19. Jockey wheel pole in the front, toolbox full of cables and electrics, and H-frame. |
20. The shed allows us to leave boats out to dry, while we perform maintenance and repairs.. |
| 21. Gear for regatta is stored in sealed containers for easy pack in... |
22. Two boats ready for maintenance, and one ready for wintger training. |
| 23. Some of the old style paddles are available in case teams forget their own. |

| Once inside the security fence, a row of 'office-type' rooms make up the first block. They house gear for Waka and Dragon boat teams. Click each thumbnail to enlarge. |
| At the far end is the shed that protects the fleet of Champion Dragon Boats. |
| The end of the building (closer to the Dragon boat storage shed) includes a large meeting room, mens' toilet (about 4 cubicles), women's toilet and shower plus a small shed with an external tilt-a-door. |
Aoraki took delivery of the first 6 Champion boats on about 19-Nov-08 (S/N CN2246 to 2251). Another four arrived on 17-March-09 (S/N CN2268 to 2271), so they were not even in the water over winter...
