Christchurch city venues
New Brighton
The compound off Owles Terrace was historically used as a Christchurch City Council workshop and base.
It is now used as a base for Waka Ama (Outrigger) Clubs, as well as Aoraki Dragons. In particular, it provides secure weather-proof storage for our Dragon Boats, and a base for virtually all our training. This venue has the advantage that it is well clear of the
stretch that rowers and kayakers practice on. Aoraki is working with Waka Ama clubs to organise an upgrade to facilities in the compound, in conjunction with Christchurch City Council. This will include improvements to the toilets and showers, meeting and storage areas. Teams should email us at aoraki.dragons@gmail.com if they have anything to add to the 'wish list'.
In May 2010, Aoraki had another clean up in our area - the far end. All the Champion Boats are inside the shed (click here for photos), laid out as follows (when viewed from the double gate):
- Left rear (on tyres) is the black "Abreast of Life" boat (identified as "Q"), under large green tarpulins.
In front of ABOL on the left is the trailer, loaded with four boats:
- Middle boat on the far side is new black boat.
- On the top rung is a new Red boat.
- Bottom boat on the near side is a new Black Boat.
- On the rung above that is another new black boat.
- In front of these is the Tu Meke boat, S/N 2246.
- In front of that is the CPC Boat (a new red one)
On the right when viewed from the double-gate are two boats at the rear, both upside down on low scaffolding frame:
- The one at the rear is an old, red Champion.
- In front of it is another old, red Champion
On the right at the front, is a boat available for training:
- Old, red Champion.
In 2008-09 they were laid out:
Left rear (on tyres) was "Abreast of Life"
Left, in front of ABOL. Trailer loaded with six boats. Bottom boat on the far side was S/N 2270 (one of the new shipment, with red scales). On the rung above that was S/N 2264 (new, red, which belongs to CPC, unmarked at that stage) and on top was S/N 2268 (new, black).
Bottom boat on the near side was S/N 2248 (old, red). On the rung above that was S/N 2247 (old, red), and on the top was S/N 2269 (new, black).
Left, in front of these was Tu Meke boat, S/N 2246.
On the right when viewed from the double-gate are two boats. The one at the rear is S/N 2251 (old, red) and is on tyres. In front of it is S/N 2250 (old, black) which is on a trolley plus tyre - this is the boat Shirley Boys are taking out for early morning practices. |

| Once inside the security fence, a row of 'office-type' rooms make up the first block. They house gear for Waka and Dragon boat teams. Click each thumbnail to enlarge. |
 |
| At the far end is the shed that protects the fleet of Champion Dragon Boats. Note, the "graffiti boat" and the Daily Freight boats (built around 1992) in front. [Update: the Graffiti boat was moved to Kaiapoi River on 3-Nov-09] |
 |
| The end of the building (closer to the Dragon boat storage shed) includes a large meeting room, mens' toilet (about 4 cubicles), women's toilet and shower plus a small shed with an external tilt-a-door. |
Aoraki took delivery of the first 6 Champion boats on about 19-Nov-08 (S/N CN2246 to 2251). Another four arrived on 17-March-09 (S/N CN2268 to 2271), so they were not even in the water over winter...
