Dunedin cityHarbour BasinIn past years, Dragon Boat events have been run in the Dunedin harbour basin. It was used again in February 2009 when Otago Museum helped Aoraki Dragons stage a regatta Chinese Cultural Festival. This is a relatively shortcourse (around 300m) but is really good for spectator involvement as people can watch from three sides of the course. The site has really good parking and public access as well as promotional visibility. Another option is further north by the Rowing Clubs, but that course is much more out of the way for spectators (hard to find and difficult for parking etc). There are also train tracks running parallel with the shore all the way along the course. See also the pictures showing Google Earth 'street view'. Masters GamesAoraki had planned to use it again as the Venue for the NZ Masters Games in early February 2012, but a more suitable venue for this type of event (especially when therte are likely to be beginner paddlers in the water) is the new section of Taieri River, near Dunedin Airport. Hopefully Dragon Boating will feature in NZ Masters Games every second year after that. |
