Canterbury watersports venues.

Christchurch City Council is looking at a new 2km course at Henderson's Basin, as part of an ambitious sports plan. Aoraki will support their campaign to ensure a proposal for a man-made rowing course is included in the Christchurch City Council's spending plans.

In reality, this fantastic initiative will take some years to build. In the meantime, CCC has recognised that it needs to upgrade facilities at Kerr's Reach, and Owles Terrace while the Henderson's Basin project is under consideration.

Aoraki will make sure the interests of Dragon Boaters will be addressed in any developments at Kerr's or Owles.

Owles Terrace

Council has plans to develop their old compound on Owles Terrace, fencing off the northern end for Canterbury Surf Life Saving, with the southern half for Waka and Dragon Boats.

We understand an Association of outrigger clubs is being formed, to represent the views of Waka Ama paddlers in any redevelopment of the Owles Terrace Compound, and to act as a combined leaseholder.

Aoraki has been talking to CPC and other key people such as Jack Wormald to ensure the specific needs of Dragon Boaters are catered for.

We hope to meet with them soon, and discuss the site plans, building alterations etc. We'll let you know how we get on...

Background to this story:
Canterbury Rowing regional manager John Wylie (Press, Wed 9-April-08) is pushing for a new 2km course at Henderson's Basin, a flood plain in south-west Christchurch. Aoraki will support their campaign to ensure a proposal for a man-made rowing course is included in the Christchurch City Council's spending plans.
The Henderson's Basin scheme is an alternative to a course planned for Lake Isaac, which is opposed by Christchurch International Airport due to bird-strike fears.
The council is exploring the Henderson's Basin scheme as part of an ambitious sports plan, but plans to upgrade facilities at Kerr's Reach, and Owles Terrace while the Henderson's Basin project is under consideration.
