South Island Champs 2011, at PegasusAoraki's final event for the season was the South Island Championships at Pegasus Lake. The earthquake of 22-Feb-11 meant a delay (to Saturday 2-April) and a change of venue. It was WELL worth the wait! More... The Early Bird at PegasusSchool and adult teams were back on the water on Saturday 19-February at Lake Pegasus. Note, this event has become poorly named, thatnks to so many other events being added to the calendar, so it will in future be known as the "Aoraki Open". More... Super 12 launches new racing ideasCanterbury Dragon Boat paddlers had a taste of some new race formats on Saturday 29-January at Lake Pegasus. With many still on holiday, teams of 12 paddlers, sweep and caller competed in 250 metre races, Le Mans style fun races and a (land based) Tug of War. More... Ice Breaker is another scorcherTeams had their first race for the 2010-11 season on Sunday 12-Dec-10. Pegasus Lake started out as hot, calm and sunny, although the wind picked up a little later in the day More... Christchurch Boys High School ExperienceOn Monday 6-December-10, Aoraki helped Christchurch Boys High to introduce the sport of Dragon Boat Racing to their Year 10 pupils. The lads seemed to have a real blast, with a beautiful calm sunny morning on the lake. A southerly arrived in the afternoon, but it only shortened the day by one race - the top Boys team (10BRS) versus the Adult Invitational team. So that saved one of the team's being embarassed on the day! Season LaunchRiccarton Club hosted the 2010-11 Season Launch meeting on 13-October-10. Important Issues included:
Kaiapoi Youth taste the Dragon's fire on PegasusOn Friday 8-Oct-10, Aoraki introduced about 38 youth and their leaders to Dragon Boating, thanks to the hospitality of Pegasus Town. Waimakariri District Council had asked Youth workers from North Canterbury Churches to help the youngsters of Kaiapoi, who have been affected by the earthquake. As part of that they introduced them to a program of activities over a fortnight, culminating in a crash course in Dragon Boating. Thanks to Rick Smith, Scruff Hewinson, Scott Johnson and surprise guest Rick Harlow for giving them the best coaching available. The session culminated with an outstanding 500 m race, to the delight (and exhaustion) of many young paddlers (and a couple of veterans!) |
