South Island Champs - 6 March-10Twelve Christchurch adult teams and eleven School teams made the early morning drive to Lake Hood on Saturday 6 March for the big event for the Southern Calender. We were very pleased to play host to "Simply The Breast" from Blenheim. This event saw a new "Mixed Schools" team from Hillmorton. It was also a chance to trial two new Finals races: Men's and Women's. This allowed Adult Mixed teams to amalgamate with others or spare paddlers to form a single sex team, to race against others (including BCS and School teams). Corporate Final winners were Beca Crewsaders (on 2:15.26) closely followed by Airways Paddlateers (2:16.56). In the Open Grand Final, Ridge Riders U23 (2:13.52) were 0.26 seconds ahead of Tu Meke (2:13.78) followed by Tu Meke Development and CPC Canterbury Dragons. More... Early Bird Regatta - Saturday 21-Feb-10Our "EB" was on the 21st February for the adult and school teams. Time to try a new venue. We had long anticipated being able to paddle at Lake Pegasus and WOW what a venue this turned out to be. The day was just stunning, glorious sunshine from start to finish. The regatta attracted 25 adult and school teams. Seeing our beautifully bedecked dragon boats plying the waters of the lake was fantastic against the backdrop of the mountains – quite stunning. The day was incredibly successful with many paddlers saying it was one of the best regattas they had attended in a long time. In the adult open section, Tu Meke dominated (as they showed at the Ice Breaker in December), edging out their youngsters in Tu Meke Development, with another young crew, Ridge Riders Under 23s showing what they can do! Then in the Corporate final, Beca Carter continue to dominate (as they did at last year's Early Bird). But this time Airways' Paddlateers managed to edge past Screws Loose from Corrections Department. In the Schools division, we had two titanic struggles going on. In the girls section, Christchurch Girls High School have been the dominant players, but the crew from Marian College are very close on their tails. The first heat of the day saw CGHS edge Marian in a very tight race, and the Final was just as tense! Meanwhile Avonside Girls had an 'internal struggle' going on, with their Year 13 girls having competition from their Year 12 school mates. Meanwhile Christchurch boys teams Bedean Dragons and Shirley Boys High School alternated wins in the heats. Set up for a 'winner takes all' finals, with two races each, Shirley Boys edged home in the end. More... Ice BreakerThe opening event for the year was the Icebreaker at Kerr's Reach, which we introduced last season. The initial concept has been refined so it is more fun and has greater participation. The regatta, on 6th December 2009, had more teams than the previous year and also more schools attended. The best part of the day was again the 2 km races with a turn at the 1,000m mark. It certainly proved to be a great deal of fun and with the much better start regime all teams had a good tilt at trying to pass others. Excellent endurance paddling by all who thought that they might not have been able to complete the race. This will become a permanent feature of the paddling calendar and the race lengths may even be extended! More details... |

Aoraki Board:There were no changes to the directors of ADBA since the AGM on the 31st July 2009. Rebecca Polachek retired at the 2010 AGM so there was one vacancy on the board. The rotational retirement plan came into effect at the 2009 AGM. All retiring directors at the 2010 AGM were eligible and willing to stand for re-election. All other directors were expected to stay in their positions until the next AGM in 2011. |
