South Island Champs - 14, 15 March-09Twelve adult teams made the early morning drive to Lake Hood on Saturday 14 March for the big event for the Southern Calender. Teams were CPC "Canterbury Dragons", Beca "Crewsaders", Sampan Warriors, "Screws Loose" (from Canterbury Prisons), Airways "Paddlateers", Abreast of Life, Tu Meke, Give It a Go, Evacut Express and the City Council's "CCC Cruisers". We were very pleased to play host to "Simply The Breast" from Blenheim. A feature was the arrival of "Fei Long - The Next Generation", and Under 23 year old Development Squad. Then on Sunday we did it all again for the Schools (except the party, sorry!) More... Early Bird Regatta - Saturday 21-Feb-09Aoraki thanks all teams for joining us for a FANTASTIC day at Kerr's Reach. We held our nerve, resisting the temptation to cancel, despite the damp weather outlook. And Dragon Boaters were rewarded with glorious weather and a great day's racing. Highlights included a moving blessing of the Champion Dragon Boats by the Abbess and her entourage of monks (including an Eye dotting ceremony), a spine chilling haka performed by St Bedes with an equally fierce reply by Shirley Boys High, and the 'graffiti art' transformation of one of our old boats. More... Dunedin regatta a huge successAoraki Dragons were thrilled to join with Otago Museum to bring Dragon Boating to the south on Waitangi Day 2009. The event helped to showcase their amazing exhibition "THE EMPEROR’S DRAGONS". Our thanks go to Emma Burns of Otago Museum for organising such an impressive public display. And we welcome new teams Pacific@ Otago University, OSCA (Otago Southland Chinese Association), Deloittes "Barbarians" and Otago Museum "Exhibitionists". Not forgetting Council tean DCC - remember how strong they were in the past? Well they're still up there! More details... Ice Breaker (and Kaiapoi Carnival)! What a scorcher! Two hot Canterbury days with some hot Dragon Boat racing. Aoraki had a busy weekend, starting Saturday 6-Dec-08, when we took two of the new Champion Boats to show off at the "Kaiapoi River Carnival". Then on Sunday 7-December Aoraki hosted the "Ice Breaker" at Kerr's Reach. And what a sight to behold - six brand new boats in full livery; Dragon heads, tails, Drummer seats and Drums! More details... Breast cancer crusaders triumph at Australian champsFour of the girls from Abreast of Life crossed the ditch in mid October 2008 to compete in the “Dragons Abreast Australia – Inaugural Corporate & Social Dragon Boat Regatta” on Darling Harbour, Sydney. And what's more, these breast cancer battlers have returned with the 'bling', this time winning silver. Gold medallist, Meri Pauwels-Gibson (Chair of Aoraki Dragons and ABOL) and her team competed against 52 other dragon boats and contributed to the more than $100,000 raised for breast cancer research at the event. Janice Melville (ABOL) is our new Treasurer, and Rebecca Polachek (CPC) also joins us, effective from our first Annual General Meeting on 9-September. Vai Papali’i (CPC) resigned in late June, and Terry Coyle (Give it a Go) is also standing down. NZ Dragon Boat AssociationThe following have been elected to the NZDBA Exec (so Aoraki are strongly represented):
NZDBA provides a national voice to represent us all to other sports organisations (such as SPARC), internationally (IDBF, Oceanic DBF and AusDBF etc). More tangibly, they are the organisers for next March's National Champs at Rotorua. More... |
