The Press reported (Monday 11-Feb-08) said:
"Flurry of paddles launches dragon regatta. A fledgling Christchurch dragon boat association launched its inaugural regatta in a flurry of paddles at the weekend. "The Aoraki Dragon Boat Association was formed last year by a band of enthusiasts after the original organisers of Christchurch dragon boat competition ended their involvement. "Aoraki president Meri Gibson said 13 teams competed in corporate and open events in its first regatta, held at Kerr's Reach on the Avon River. "The not-for-profit group had been lent four boats from the national body and were keen to promote the sport in the city. Gibson said it would hold its first Christchurch championship regatta on March 1 and 2. "The national championships, where her cancer survivor team Abreast of Life will defend its title, will be held in Auckland on March 29 and 30. Dragon boat teams comprise 20 paddlers, a caller and a sweep that steers. They compete over a course of 500m."
