Sweep Accreditation

Sweeping is a critical element of the success of a dragon boat team - without a sweep, the boat isn't going anywhere! We encourage all teams to maintain a pool of experienced sweeps and to get team members to go through the sweep training process so that they can take on the 'big stick' duties to ensure the team's on-going success.

Opposite are button links to the current NZDBA Sweep Accreditation Manual, along with a Sweep Training Presentation provided by Rick Smith, Aoraki Dragons' Regional Sweep Coordinator.

Please be aware of the following summary restrictions on permitted activities for sweeps (but refer to the NZDBA Sweep Accreditation Manual for full details):

  • Level 0 sweeps (novices) are those who have not yet been observed nor tested by a regional sweep coordinator. They may only sweep a boat in training sessions of their own crew whilst under direct (i.e. in-boat) supervision of a Level 3 sweep
  • Level 1 sweeps (restricted accreditation) are those who have demonstrated their knowledge of safety briefings and capsize drills and know local waterway rules/hazards. They may sweep at regular training sessions, but not regattas, whilst being mentored by a Level 3 sweep. They may sweep junior/school crews (although sweep's minimum age is 15) under supervision of a Level 3 sweep
  • Level 2 sweeps (provisional accreditation) are those who have successfully passed both a written theory test and practical assessment under the direction of the regional sweep coordinator. They may sweep adult crews during training sessions without supervision. They may sweep adult and junior crews at regattas in conditions appropriate to experience, wearing an orange hi viz vest. L2 sweeps may not sweep during hours of darkness
  • Level 3 sweeps (full accreditation) are those who have swept - without incident - at three individual race events, at least one of which must be a regional sanctioned event (for Aoraki, this is the South Island Champs regatta) and at least two races must be in 20-paddler boats. Having met these criteria, L3 sweeps may sweep all crew types at training and race events. Only L3 (and above) sweeps can sweep at National Championships regattas. At race events, they must wear yellow hi viz vests. L3 sweeps can instruct, mentor and supervise L0 - L2 trainee sweeps. Note that L3 sweeps may not sweep during hours of darkness.

Note that Level 3 re-accreditation is automatic if sweeping activity is maintained within the preceding three years. This includes "significant seasonal incident-free sweep activity." Otherwise, it requires observation by at least one Sweep Coordinator at a NZDBA-sanctioned event. See the NZDBA Sweep Accreditation Manual for full details.

Below is a summary list of all currently qualified and active Level 3 (and above) sweeps in the Aoraki region, ordered by team name.
